How I helped Event Agency Grand Canyon to get people in Gouda excited for winter

In testimonials Posted

As a Dutchie, ice skating is more or less in my blood. When I was a little kid and my parents took me out to the neighborhood pond to skate. I remember looking up to my mother while she held my hand and seeing the people moving around, supported by chairs they brought from their dining rooms. Ever since then I have loved ice skating.

The first year I lived in Gouda, I had heard that an ice skating rink would be constructed on the market square in December. You can imagine my excitement when I got to meet with Grand Canyon, which is the agency that organizes the event. We would work together to create a coloring picture and get families excited for this unique winter event!

What was the idea behind the coloring picture?

Yorinn Dukker from Grand Canyon had an illustration in mind to use in a coloring competition for the local kids. “We wanted to create an extra experience for them this year. To have the beautiful scene of the Gouda market translated, we wanted to bring in a professional. Because we like working with local entrepreneurs, we quickly landed on Anna Lena.”

The idea behind the coloring picture was to create a wintery scene that is recognizable and shows the old-fashioned, idyllic coziness of Dutch winters. Besides having the coloring picture in the ice skating rink restaurant, it was also used for a competition in which many a local kid participated!

“The process of creating the coloring picture went quickly and with quality, and we had established a clear idea of the expectations and end result. The feedback we gave on iterations was entirely put to good use by Anna Lena to get to an even better outcome. The illustration was really valuable to us and it achieved great results on many levels. We can’t help but think of the possibility of a new version for 2019-2020. Anna Lena, thank you for your wonderful contribution and creating more icy fun this winter!”

For those of you who would like to see the process of going from a rough sketch on my iPad to the final illustration, please check out the time lapse video below!

This project has been my absolute favourite of 2018. Also, seeing the colored versions that the kids made was really precious.
